Lights contest brings out city’s festive spirit

Stratford Gazette

Judges from the volunteer Civic Beautification and Environmental Awareness Committee have selected the winners and runners-up in its annual Light Up Stratford contest, which first began in 1994.

Residents of Stratford and the surrounding area are encouraged to take a drive and enjoy the decorations in the five Stratford wards and the commercial sector.

Winners are listed below with the runners-up for each ward in parentheses.

Avon Ward:

12 Sir Adam Beck Rd.

(35 Sir Adam Beck Rd.)

Falstaff Ward:

(182 Romeo St. S.)

Hamlet Ward:

(69 Patricia Rd.)

Romeo Ward:

(235 King St.)

Shakespeare Ward:

This year, the Light Up Stratford committee decided to add another category of “Best Street” in each ward, and from the five best streets to choose an overall winner as the “Best Street in Stratford.”

As the judges drove around searching for the most creative and innovatively decorated houses to be the winner and runner-up, they also looked for a street where they felt the residents had got into the festive spirit and had made the most effort to make Stratford sparkle.

There was, however, no clear consensus as to which was the overall best street in Stratford. But two streets, Morgan and Glendon, stood out as contenders. Other streets worthy of mention were Douglas Street between Huntington and Forman, Redford Crescent, and Whitelock.
