People-focussed calendar features some real gems

St. Marys Journal Argus

St. Marys Journal Argus

The Rotary Club of St. Marys has once again produced a calendar of St. Marys-themed photos for the 2014 year, and it’s currently available for free at the places of business of the calendar’s advertisers, as well as when purchasing tickets in the club’s Christmas draw.

Photos for the calendar have again been taken from the collection of the St. Marys Museum. And, when opening the 2014 edition, it becomes immediately evident that the committee charged with selecting the photos made a deliberate and very successful attempt to include a lot of faces from bygone years.

Watch for a team of workers fixing up Queen Street in 1921; a man overlooking construction of the Wildwood dam nearly 50 years ago; and a lovely photo (which appeared in much smaller format in the Journal Argus several months ago) of women eating melons.

A true highlight, however, is a 1978 photo of the staff from M&M Variety, long a cornerstone of downtown St. Marys commerce.

Watch for the Rotary Club tickets (and calendars) at the Independent grocery store.
