The hospital is the heart of our community – and this year, the our hospital will also serve as the local heart of the annual CKNX family of radio station’s Radiothon fundraising activities on Saturday, Oct. 19.
It’s a switch from past years, when St. Marys-based Radiothon activities — such as the hospital staff breakfast, and lunchtime barbecue — have taken place downtown. This year, the rotunda of the Wellness Centre (at the rear of the hospital) will serve as the Radiothon hub, with volunteers ready to accept donations to support the activities of the St. Marys Memorial Hospital Foundation.
This is the third year our local hospital foundation has participated in the Wingham-based Radiothon, a one-day fundraiser for the 15 smaller hospitals in our region. Over the past two years, the Radiothon day has raised over $70,000 for healthcare staff recruitment and retention and for a new digital x-ray for St. Marys Memorial Hospital.
This year’s goal is to raise $50,000 for healthcare staff recruitment and retention. Dowler-Karn recently started the race to the goal with a $1,500 donation – proceeds from its “barbecue build-off” event in June, which were then matched by the company.
“We’re challenging everyone to do what they can for our hospital,” notes hospital foundation chair Doug Holliday, adding that businesses are also welcome to make Radiothon contributions. “Dowler-Karn showed great community leadership by deciding to hold an event in support of our hospital and we appreciate this contribution.”
The community at large has many ways to show support for our hospital. The Radiothon kicks off on Friday, Oct. 18 with a party at the Wellness Centre rotunda from 5-9 p.m., with live entertainment and other surprises to be announced.
On Saturday, the hospital will be alive with fun for the whole family. Hospital staff and doctors will be cooking up breakfast sandwiches from 8- 11 a.m., and the lunch barbecue runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Throughout the day, the talented students of The World’s Coolest Music Store will be performing, and there will be a bouncy castle and face painting for the kids. Look for more information in next week’s Journal Argus.
If weather permits, those coming to join in the Radiothon fun are asked to walk or bike up to the hospital to save parking spaces for those truly in need – and to practice some preventative medicine with a bit of exercise.
If you can’t make it to the hospital on Saturday, Oct. 19, you can call into CKNX at 1-877-227-3486 to pledge your donation. You can also donate online at any time by visiting www.healthcareheros.ca – be sure to specify St. Marys Memorial Hospital in your donation. Everyone is encouraged to listen to CKNX between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to hear local healthcare stories and people you know pledging their support to our local hospital.
