New frontiers

Stratford Gazette

About 50 students from the University of Waterloo Stratford campus took advantage of the building's MicroTile wall to watch live a space-to-Earth connection with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Chris Hadfield Friday morning.

Hadfield, who deployed to the International Space Station in a rocket on Dec. 19, is helping conduct the university's research on how zero gravity affects the circulatory system. The study will help to understand what factors might be involved in the hardening of arteries as people age.

The entire 20-minute downlink – a first for a university – included questions from students in Waterloo and presentations from fellow astronaut Jeremy Hansen and university researcher Dr. Richard Hughson.
