Johanna Terpstra

Johanna (Annie) Terpstra of Greenwood Court, Stratford passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family, on Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012 at the age of 99.

Beloved wife of the late Nicolaas Terpstra (1992). Loving mother of Emma and Henk Boersen, Charles and Catherine, Julie and Martin Van Bakel, Nick and Catherine, Herman and Rosemary, Joe and Miriam, Joanne De Brabandere, Mary Terpstra and Mike Terpstra; son-in-law Bill Van Nes and daughter-in-law Hennie Terpstra. Oma welcomed and cherished 56 grandchildren and 152 great-grandchildren.

Johanna was predeceased by her children Helen (1976), Margaret Van Nes (2000), Ben (2005), and Patricia Armstrong (2011); grandchildren Mary Terpstra (1972) Nick Van Nes (2001) and Brian Terpstra (2010) and great-grandchildren Kathleen Van Bakel (1993) and Alexandra DeGroot (2008).

Survived by siblings Nic Krijnen and Emma de Dood; predeceased by 15 brothers and sisters.

Parish prayers were held on Friday, Dec. 21 at 1:30 p.m. and were followed by the family receiving friends from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Brussels, where the Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, Dec. 22 at 11 a.m. by Father Keith Morrison. Burial in St. Ambrose Cemetery, Brussels.

Donations in memory of Johanna can be made to Canadian Food for Children, St. Ambrose Building Fund or a charity of one’s choice.

Laurens Tryssenaar

Laurens “Bob” Tryssenaar passed away at Caressant Care Nursing Home, Listowel on Monday, December 24, 2012 at the age of 96.

Survived by his beloved wife Christina of Listowel and five children, Thea Merritt of Beamsville, Antoinette Villa and her husband Nick of Blaine, Washington, Walter Tryssenaar and his wife Judi of Stratford, Laura Tryssenaar and her husband Bill Armstrong of Listowel, and Joyce Tryssenaar of Thunder Bay.

He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, one sister-in-law Sofia Hartmann of Ingelheim, Germany and many nieces and nephews, both in Canada and the Netherlands.

He is predeceased by his parents and siblings.

Laurens was born in Oudewater, The Netherlands on May 2, 1916 to Leonardus Arnoldus Trijssenaar and Geertje Boer. He married Christina Johanna Bos on March 23, 1943 in Zeist. In 1948 they immigrated to Canada. Laurens was a baker by trade but came to Canada to become a dairy farmer. He worked as a farm hand in the Millbank and Tavistock areas before they settled in Acton in 1953. In 1967 they moved to Listowel to farm full-time. For many years following retirement, they wintered in Lakeland, Florida.

Laurens was an avid Scrabble player, loved to read, do jigsaw puzzles, and play cards. He was a member of Trinity United Church, loved singing, and knew the words to many hymns. He enjoyed company and conversation.

Laurens has bequeathed his body to the University of Guelph, where he will now continue his service through teaching.

A memorial service was held at the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Listowel Public Library or charity of one’s choice may be made in his memory through the funeral home.

Lawrence Fischer

Lawrence Fischer passed away at his home in Listowel on Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012 at the age of 83.

Husband of Gwen Fischer (nee Larson) and father of Melvin Fischer and his fiancée Joyce Fair, and Glenn and Sandy Fischer, all of Listowel. Remembered by his grandchildren Cissley Ann Cabana of Kitchener, Brandon Fischer of Mount Forest, Pamela and Dave Hodges of Listowel, Murray Fischer of Listowel, and Wendy and Matt Brandt of Kitchener; and by his great-grandchildren Tate, Eathan, Riley, Justin, Taylor, Kaighlynn and Jenna.

Brother of Howard and Pearl Fischer of Kitchener and Florence Broughton of Listowel, and brother-in-law of Dorothy Fischer of Listowel. Survived by his nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by his parents Edward and Anna (nee Krotz) Fischer, and by his brothers and sisters Elsie Wick, Carrie Fischer, Arthur Fischer, Una Small, Julius Fischer, Milton Fischer, Norma Darroch, Gladys Marsh, Roy Fischer and June Fischer.

Friends called at the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel on Friday, Dec. 28 for visitation from 12 noon until the time of funeral service at 1:30 p.m. Interment in Fairview Cemetery, Listowel.

Memorial donations to Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated.

Ruth Weeks

Ruth Weeks (nee Gregory) passed away peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012 at Sunnyside Home at the age of 84.

Beloved wife of the late Doug Weeks (2002). Loved mother of Janet McDougall (Al), Gordon Weeks (Maureen), late David Weeks (1997) and Kathy McArthur. Proud grandma of Blair, Brent, Eric, Jenna, Daniel and Andrew “AJ”.

Dear sister of Gwen Greathead, John, Gordon and George Gregory.

Ruth’s family received relatives and friends at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, Kitchener on Thursday, Dec. 27 from 2-4 p.m. A memorial celebration of her life was held at Calvin Presbyterian Church, Kitchener on Friday, Dec. 28 at 1 p.m. Cremation, with a private interment in Listowel.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to Camp Kintail, Box 153 Goderich, Ontario would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home).
